PSU problems

After 2 years in 24/7 operation its likely your PSU will break down the most common problem will be the "caps problem".

In the most cases the player will just display "KISS DVD" in the VFD-display.

As you can see in the picture above it is typical for the DP-558 PSU that the C19 and C20 will break. This can be seen by the swelling on the top. But often the C15 is broken, too. All the other capacitors are not broken but they are also weak. For example a 220µF capacitor has at least 190µF. This won't make your player more reliable, of course. So the best solution to this problem is to replace all the "caps" if you are not able to measure them.

Component list (what raffe used for the DP-558 PSU, from: [1])

Some say that it's enough to only replace C15, C19 and C20 , so maybe start with that:

C15: 1000μF 16V 105°C [2] 67-150-15 -----------> (was 1000μF 16V 105°C)

C19: 2200μF 16V 105°C [3] 67-150-23 -----------> (was 2200μF 10V 105°C)

C20: 1000μF 16V 105°C [4] 67-150-15 -----------> (was 1000μF 10V 105°C)

The other components:

C18: 47μF 16V 105°C [5] 67-200-15 ---------------> (was 47μF 16V 105°C)

C23A: 100μF 50V 105°C [6] 67-151-63 -----------> (was 100μF 50V 105°C)

C16: 470μF 16V 105°C [7] 67-150-07 -------------> (was 470μF 16V 105°C)

C21: 470μF 16V 105°C [8] 67-150-07-------------> (was 470μF 16V 105°C)

C22: 470μF 16V 105°C [9] 67-150-07-------------> (was 470μF 16V 105°C)

C17: 220μF 25V 105°C [10] 67-150-56 --------> (was 220μF 25V 105°C)

C23: 100μF 50V 105°C [11] 67-151-63 ------> (was 100μF 50V 105°C)

C24,C25,C26,C27: Did not have ------------------> (was 104) You don't need to buy this!

C14,C13: 102, they had only one [12] 65-864-99 --> (was 102 1KV) You don't need to buy this!

All this cost me about 75 SEK ≈ 8 EUR

1. So some new are 16V when the old one was 10V, but they in Elfa said it was OK.

2. The new 2200μF and the new 1000μF are quit big, 13 mm in diameter (also higher, but that is not a problem).

You can change them your self (and buy the cheapest tools, see [13]):

  • Soldering iron 6.47 EUR [14]
  • Desoldering tool 6.09 EUR [15] (or maybe desoldering braid if you like it better [16] )
  • Solder 3.84 EUR [17]
  • Read the step-by-step guide (scroll down [18]) and please observe polarity of capacitors (+/-)

In total (with capacitors) all this cost you about 25 EUR

kisstester [19]

To replace them, and believe me its not that hard you need:

  • 1. Phillips screwdriver (for the kiss case and the four psu screws)
  • 2. solder gun (not more than 30w power) and of course a tiny bit of solder
  • 3. i would highly recommend unsolder wire (also called desoldering braid, absorbs the old solder like a sponge)
  • 4. two capacitors 1000μF 16V 105°C (to replace C15 and C20)
  • 5. one capacitor 2200μF 16V 105°C (to replace C19)
  • 6. about 20-30 minutes of your precious time
  • Read the step-by-step guide (scroll down [20])

BUT TAKE CARE!!! THE PSU IS CONNECTED TO THE LINE AND SO THERE WILL BE ABOUT 325V AT THE C4. THIS VOLTAGE CAN STAY THERE FOR A VERY LONG TIME AFTER THE PSU HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED AND IF IT IS DEFECTIVE. EVEN WITH A WORKING PSU YOU SHOULD WAIT ABOUT 5 MINUTES BEFORE YOU TOUCH ANYTHING.

IF YOU DID ANY REPAIRS AT THE PSU YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE NO WIRES OR ANY OTHER PARTS BETWEEN THE PRIMARY AND THE SECONDARY PART OR ANY OTHER PART OF THE PLAYER. ELSE YOU WILL HAVE MAINS VOLTAGE ON THE PLAYER

Another hint for those who dont want to solder the PSU by themselve; the Company ESCoor ELECTRONIC SERVICE COORDINATION GMBH in Lueneburg, Germany still sells the PSU for the DP-558. They emailed me, that the "Netzteil (PSU) ACHME 561 B 01 is available for 41.65 Euro incl. taxes. Please visit [21] for contact information.
